IDUS: Rhine-Ruhr 2025 celebrates university sport

20 September is a special day for university sport, as the date has been established as the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) since its introduction in 2016. Organised by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in cooperation with UNESCO, the day is celebrated in various ways in well over 100 member countries.

The date of 20 September was deliberately chosen. It marks the beginning of the academic year in many countries and was also the date on which the first World Student Games ended in the Polish capital, Warsaw, in 1924.

IDUS aims to forge links between universities and their local communities, with sport, physical activity and healthy living playing a leading role. However, the IDUS framework is not only used for sport. FISU is involved in various IDUS activities throughout the month of September to promote debates on university sport. In this way, the IDUS serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas, challenges and opportunities in university sport worldwide.

The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany in July 2025 will be a major highlight in university sport. Of course, we as the Organising Committee will also be taking part in the university sports festival - not just on 20 September, but throughout the year. A few days ago, our team was on the tennis court together and had a great afternoon. The aim is to have tried out all 18 sports that will be part of Rhine-Ruhr 2025 by the time the FISU Games start. The interest in trying new sports and having fun together is huge and shows how sport brings people together.

adh organises the University Run again

The German University Sports Association (adh) is also organising the fifth annual adh University Run on 20 September. Students, staff and alumni alike are invited to lace up their running shoes. The aim is to run as many kilometres as possible in 60 minutes - for yourself and for your university. It doesn't matter whether you run the full hour or not, or where you complete the distance.
