Competing for change: FISU World Conference

From 17 until 19 July 2025, the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum will become a centre for interdisciplinary scientific exchange when the FISU World Conference takes place there under the title “Competing for change: Exploring sustainability and (mental) health through sports”. This conference is dedicated to the critical issues at the intersection of physical performance, (mental) health and environmental sustainability, focusing on an urgent topic that is of enormous importance in today's fast-paced world.

The three-day event will address four key sub-themes:

  • Mental health & performance under pressure among athletes

  • Balancing acts: work-life balance and resilience among coaches, referees and the entourage

  • Challenge universities to explore ecological sustainability on campus

  • Health and wellbeing in sports and physical activity

These sub-themes reflect societal concerns regarding (mental) health resilience, sustainable development and overall wellbeing. The conference provides a platform that promotes research and creativity beyond academia and opens up new perspectives.

In addition to outstanding keynote speakers, poster sessions and panel discussions, participants can expect a multicultural and engaging festival: the RUHR GAMES take place simultaneously to the FISU World Conference at the Jahrhunderthalle. A variety of edutainment opportunities, innovative formats to get actively involved and try-out possibilities for trend sports will be offered. On top of that, workshops and cultural events offer space for exchange and discussion.

Abstract submission will open at the beginning of October

The FISU World Conference is the academic highlight of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games Summer. Since its first regular edition in 1960, it has become a core element of the FISU World University Games, where the global sports community meets the future of education and innovation.

The abstract submission opens at the beginning of October. Registration for the conference (and thereby the opportunity to purchase tickets) opens 1 December 2024 and closes 31 March 2025. Interested parties can register via the homepage. Further information will be announced at a later date on the official website.
